Film countdown to the New Year.

“The Apartment” (1960) One of my favorites of all time.  A low level desk clerk gets mixed up with the suits, dealing out his apartment quid pro quo, of course the one girl he has eyes for is rendezvous-ing on his bed with the boss.  After a long-awaited epiphany at 12 o'clock midnight on new years eve 1960, she returns to the apartment to tell her man to shut up and deal.

Holiday Inn (1942) (Although hard to enjoy a film with a scene crammed with blackface characters and antebellem glamorization,) some parts of Holiday Inn are quite lovely.  Think pre-"White Christmas" (1950) fun at the inn with Bing and friends.  Add a gliding Fred Astaire to the (re)mix by Beef Wellington.

“Its a Wonderful Life” (1946) Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.  Not much else can be said about this Xmas classic with the most emotional and spirited Auld Lang Syne NYE party in film history.

“Rudolph’s Shiny New Year” (1976)  This is one of the forgotten classic holiday stop-motion films...  which is a pity because its celebrating the only secular holiday this time of year and filled with a great, hokey 70s color palette.

“Repeat Performance” (1947)  Dark new year ahead? Starlet Shelly Page murders no good husband Barney in cold blood new years eve.  John Friday can help her recover.  She's given a second chance at the previous year when the sun comes up new years day.

“The Poseidon Adventure” (1972)  Another year, another disaster epic.  The bubbly stops pouring on new years day when the seas start shaking.  Few see the new year to completion.

“Happy New Year, Charlie Brown” (1985) How to spend new years with a lovable hermit.

“Bundle Of Joy” (1956)  Kitschy as all get-out for the post-teenybopper set.  Reynolds and Fisher ham it up in music and comedy as a baby brings the couple together in domestic bliss.  Fisher hated this squeaky clean comedy routine and the obvious (maybe even exploitative) plug for Reynolds and Fishers real life new born they had together earlier that year: Carrie Fisher aka: Princess Leia.

A great mash up of classic new years scenes: Ocean's 11, One Way Passage, The Gold Rush, Waterloo Bridge, An Affair to Remember, Wee Willy Winkie, Scandal, The Apartment, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Bachelor Mother and It's a Wonderful Life.
