Le ballon rouge / The red balloon (1956).

Watch all three parts of this stunning classic on Youtube!

This thirty-four minute short film in 1956 follows the adventures of a young boy who finds a sentient, though mute, glowingly red balloon on an overcast day.  The movie was shot on-location in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris, France.  Boy and balloon play together in the streets of Paris and try to elude a gang of boys that wants to destroy the balloon. This film was the winner of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar yet there is almost no dialog spoken in the film.  This film had one of the largest non-theatrical runs in the history of American cinema. Thousands of 16-millimeter prints were distributed to schools across the country.
