Still Film: Return to Oz, Part 2.

For Halloween I am doing stills / screen caps for the full Return to Oz (1985) film in 4 parts across 4 days.  For Part 1 see yesterdays stills.

In these scenes, our heroine Dorothy meets the witch for the first time and we are introduced to this AMAZING, almost Louis XIII + Thai-inspired mirrored and gold-leafed palace where this lovely woman is strumming a tiny guitar instrument like a cavaquinho or gypsy guitar.   Come to find out, this lovely lady is lovely by choice rather than birth as she literally chooses which face to put on each morning out of a cabinet of stunning beauty heads she places on her witchy frame.  This scene is by far the most memorable in the movie-- absolutely unforgettable in its eerie imagery.  The Queen takes Dorothy by the hand and leads her to her glass cabinets of heads, each one fresh and dewey, blinking from behind the glass, waiting to be chosen.  Putting on a more senior, more jaded, more fitting face from the cabinet, the Queen shows her true colors.

As they move to the Queen's bedroom and dressing room we see a more Art Nouveau / Art Deco styled take on royal luxury than the sitting room we were introduced to at the start.  You can start to take notice of the winding, vine-like ornamentation, stained glass, statues of winged women in the Queen's chambers.  Dorothy is soon locked away for insolence and the Queen reveals her true motives to cultivate Dorothy's youthful blushing face for her collection.  As Dorothy is trapped in a rather lovely, plush chamber filled with paintings and antiques Dorothy notices a rather raggedy fellow to help and befriend.  This Mr. Jack(-o-Latern) Pumpkinhead looks marvelous when he stands:  Massive pumpkin head, stick thin limbs, towering height, and the balance of a teeter-totter.  In terms of design, Jack is a fantastic character whose lopsided balance and height makes him so amazing to look at.  Its hard to believe he wouldn't have inspired another veerrry similar Jack from Nightmare before Christmas. After Dorothy reanimates this sweet awkward character, the strange journey with her pals Jack and the Moosehead-soon-to-be-the-flying-craft begin.  All they need now is that pesky red key....
