I love these quietly haunting, heartbreaking, somber country songs. I love more disjointed lyrics in songs but I'm also a sucker for a delicately woven story.
This is song is lovely and so subtly unsettling. Its this idealized portrait of rural American life with something disjointed, unnerving beneath the surface. Something isn't quite right. Bobbie Gentry is so beautiful and sweet like a doll strumming her nylon string guitar, but there is strange still life of a family at the dinner table looming behind her.
